(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois doctors are reassuring patients seeking abortion care after a Texas federal judge's recent ruling that could block access to a popular abortion medication.
Also known as the abortion pill, Mifepristone is a commonly used drug for first trimester medication abortions.
Michelle Brown, an OBGYN with Northwestern Medicine, said it's a medication doctors use every day.
"It's used for multiple different patient populations, whether that's people seeking abortion or people facing miscarriage or stillbirth. And so, losing access to that medication would definitely impact patients."
She says for now, she's reassuring patients even though the future of Mifepristone is up in the air.
“We have other regimens that would allow us to safely perform medication abortion,” she said.
Brown said Misoprostol is a second pill used in combination with Mifepristone. It is less effective on its own and can have more side effects.
