MILWAUKEE, WIS. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you want to know who's going to have the most success in the NCAA Tournament maybe you should talk to a physicist.
Dr. Andrew Kunz, chair and professor of physics at Marquette University in Milwaukee says rebounding is about positioning and attitude but also science.
“It’s an angle, call it analytics, but it’s also physics and math. Where’s that ball most likely to come off? Every team now charts. There’s charts out there, if the ball is shot from here, where is it most likely to go? The good rebounders have studied those charts and know that if the shot is coming from the right side of the lane, the rebound is most likely coming off the left side,” Kunz reasons.
Kunz says physics and math can also be applied to shooting.
“...Young shooters, they just want to get the ball to the basket. So, it always comes in on a line drive. It will go in sometimes, any shot can go in, but you’re really trying to maximize that probability that it will drop. Having a nice, soft arc, getting some spin on the ball is a key thing,” Kunz adds.
