CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two piping plover chicks hatched this week at the home of Monty and Rose near Montrose and the lakefront.
ChicagoPipingPlovers.org posted an update Thursday saying the chicks are able to leave the nest after hatching. They run around finding small bugs to feed themselves.
Monty and Rose do not feed the chicks, but spend their time guarding them from predators.
Their previous attempt to reproduce earlier this year was foiled when a skunk invaded their nest and stole their eggs. After that, conservationists built an enclosure to protect the nest.
The piping plover in the Great Lakes area is an endangered species, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
