CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A plan to convert a nearly 120-year-old factory building in St. Charles into high-end townhouses has been dropped.
The plan, approved in 2017, was to convert the old Heinz Brothers Cut Glass Company building into 14 townhouses.
The two-story building was built in 1904 and is brick and has 8,000 square feet.
The developers now say it's too far gone while a preservationist said it's "demolition by neglect" because the developers waited too long with the building exposed to the elements.
Another, Al Watts with Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley, would like to see it saved.
"The manufacturing history of St. Charles was very significant, particularly the beginning of the 20th century. And there's very few of those buildings that are left in the city," Watts said.
Now, it appears there will be one fewer.
The developers are seeking a demolition permit.
