A large redevelopment project in St. Charles has now been shelved.

The plan had been to demolish the majority of the mostly vacant Charlestowne Mall and build in its place over 500 apartments and townhouses plus a hotel, along with restaurants and retail. But after St. Charles aldermen and planning commissioners questioned whether that plan was the best fit, the proposal was put on hold, and the developers have now pulled out.

Anchors Von Mar and Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18 remain in the mall.

St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek said the hope is another developer will submit plans to redevelop the property.
