(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In March, the intersection of Catalpa, between Clark St. and Ashland Avenue, was named “Elise Malary Way”, in honor of the transgender activist and founding member of the Andersonville-based Chicago Therapy Collective.
The intersection will be transformed into Elise Malary Plaza. It will be Andersonville's first shared, pedestrian-only public plaza. It is set to open in 2025.
The final design, which will feature fully-accessible walkways and sustainable green spaces, will be unveiled at an Open House Community Meeting at St. Gregory Catholic Church Social Hall.
Malary died in 2022. The 31-year-old's body was pulled from Lake Michigan.
While the medical examiner determined she'd drowned, a manner of death could not be determined.
The street renaming in March occurred on what would have been her birthday.
