Officers were “conducting an investigation” at 72nd and Artesian when they encountered an “armed offender” around 1:50 a.m., Chicago police said in a statement.
An officer fired shots and hit the boy and that he had two bullet wounds, police said. Police did not say the suspect fired his weapon.
The was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said his injuries were not life-threatening and that his condition was stabilized.
Police did not release the boy's age. Merritt did not have the boy's exact age, but said he was 15 years old or younger, because he was taken to a pediatric trauma center.
An officer was taken to a hospital for observation and was in good condition, police said.
Police spokesmen are not giving details, but they have posted photos on social media of guns they say they found at the scene and near the scene: a pistol with an extended magazine and a rifle.
18th Ward Alderman Derrick Curtis told WBBM he will work closely with police and will talk with the boy’s family.
“I know the block very well,” he said. "I don’t have a lot of violence, especially armed violence in the ward, but that particular block has been raining a little bit.”
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed to WBBM that their investigation of the shooting is active and ongoing.
The officer who fired shots will be put on administrative duties for 30 days, per department policy, police said.
