(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 24-year-old motorist turned himself into police after a fatal hit-and-run accident and allegedly admitted he was using a smart phone at the time he struck a pedestrian.

A 18-year-old Aurora man was fatally struck by pickup truck early Sunday at East Indian Trail and Mitchell Road, Aurora police say.

The vehicle fled the scene, and the pedestrian, Juan Carlos Zamudio, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Around noon Sunday, Jace Williams of North Aurora drove the pickup truck to the Aurora Police Station and turned himself in, police said in a news release.

When detectives interviewed Williams, “They learned that he was using his iPhone for GPS and attempting to input an address into the phone when the crash occurred,” police said.

Williams faces a felony count of failing to report an accident or death and one felony count of aggravated use of a communication device causing death, authorities said.

Kane County court records also show Williams was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

His next court date is scheduled for April 7.
