(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in St. Charles shot and killed a suspect who entered an assisted living center with a chainsaw.
St. Charles Police say they were called to River Glen of St. Charles on North 5th Avenue around 8:45 a.m. Sunday for reports of a shirtless man who was attempting to cut down trees on the property.
The man has been identified as 41-year-old Daniel Escalera of Stockwell, Indiana.
As police arrived, witnesses told them the suspect had entered the assisted living facility. Police say he was confronting residents with the chainsaw.
Police attempted to deescalate the situation, but the suspect reportedly continued to attempted to use the chainsaw against residents. The attempted attacks continued after a taser was deployed, according to police.
An officer then shot Escalera. First-aid was administered immediately.
The suspect was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Officials say Escalera does not have any known ties to the senior living center or the area. Additionally, the St. Charles Police Department has not previously encountered him.
It is still unclear why he was in St. Charles or the facility.
Some residents of the facility and officers were treated for minor injuries.
Police are withholding the suspect’s name until their next of kin can be notified.
The Illinois State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
