(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago Police dispatcher who was recently honored for his composure when Officer Ella French was fatally shot says the department is understaffed, and it’s affecting at least one area of the city.

In a recent Facebook Live video, dispatcher Keith Thornton said the 16th District, based in Jefferson Park and covering the Northwest Side, is facing strain.

The department does not replace officers who are promoted or retire, and that means longer wait times for people who call 9-1-1.

Thornton was recently honored by the city for his composure on the police radio the August night Officer French was shot and killed. During a traffic stop, a motorist allegedly opened fire on French and her partner, Carlos Yanez Jr., who also was hit.

Ald. Nick Sposato, 38th, said he and the other aldermen who represent neighborhoods inside the 16th District plan to meet with Supt. David Brown to discuss staffing.

WBBM Newsradio has asked the Chicago Police Department for a response.
