(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new poll shows Chicago parents and others feel the Public Schools are doing a poor to middling job educating their children, but they don't blame CPS.

David Schleifer, Vice President for research at Public Agenda says their poll shows that most of those surveyed would give the Chicago Public Schools a C grade for the job they're doing. Additionally, those who responded don't put much stock in reports of rising test scores.

“The schools really are doing better and I think that's important,” Schleifer said.

“I also think either that message hasn't gotten to people yet or people are, you know, maybe don't feel like it's enough yet.”

He also says parents want the best for their children.

“People are focused on academics as the most pressing problem. And they think the system's main goal should be to prepare students for college and relatively few people think that the city’s schools are there yet.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Schleifer says the poll for the Sun Times in Chicago Public Radio shows that parents don't blame CPS for the poor grades.

“We ask people, you know, why they think a school might have a lot of students who are not succeeding academically. And the most commonly cited reason was poverty and other challenges that impact students.”

Most of the respondents however, do say schools need better resources.
