(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A garden planted this year at the Kane County Government Center was far more productive than predicted, and that's good news for a nearby food pantry.
Kurt Lebo, who finds uses for the land around the government center, decided to start a garden of about 600 square feet. It’s been tended by volunteer county employees.
He was surprised by how many tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, summer squash and other crops the garden produced -- more than 1,000 pounds.
The yield was donated to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, Lebo said.
The garden was so successful that Lebo is now thinking about planting fruit trees at the government center to increase the amount of food harvested for the hungry.
