CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A previous Metra system outage is now causing extensive delays for several rail lines.
The transit agency says they experienced an outage with their Positive Train Control system. The outage was resolved at around 1 p.m.
However all lines and territories that Metra directly dispatches are still impacted.
Affected lines include the Rock Island, Metra Electric, Southwest Service, Milwaukee District North and West, as well as the North Central Service.
Although trains are operational, Metra says there are lengthy delays. Some trains are at least 30 minutes behind schedule.
Earlier, the Metra Electric line was completely shutdown near the Museum Campus due to the outage.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, "Positive Train Control (PTC) systems are designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of train through switches left in the wrong position."
