(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Another piping plover has arrived at Montrose Beach, and one of the people leading the efforts to protect the birds says this one could be especially valuable.

Tamima Itani is the lead volunteer coordinator of the group Chicago Piping Plovers, which monitors plovers at Montrose Beach.

She says a male plover named Imani was recently joined by two other males, while the latest plover to arrive at Montrose Beach might be female.

“Sea rockets, one of the captive reared chicks that was released at Montrose last year, is back. And the preliminary indications tell us that she may be a female,” Itani said.

Sea Rocket’s arrival could be especially good news, Itani said.

“Imani has been a bachelor for the past two years, waiting for a female to show up. So we're hoping that may be his luck, that the female has showed up,” Itani said.

“What we don't know yet is if Sea Rocket is a female.”

Itani said, if Sea Rocket is a female, there's hope that she would mate with at least one of the males.
