BATAVIA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A week after a Central Illinois judge halted the Governor’s mandate, questions over masking have created many challenges at local schools.
Classes were cancelled Friday for Kaneland District 302 students while administrators plan COVID-19 mitigation strategies. They’ll make up the day in May.
Safety concerns and potential disruptions have forced high school students in Hampshire District 300 to go remote Friday. A parent was escorted out of Tuesday’s school board meeting after yelling at members, and there were rumors of a student walkout.
Meanwhile, Batavia District 101 suspended enforcing mask wearing. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Hichens wrote in a letter to parents, "while we believe that we remain subject to the Governor’s executive orders, enforcement has become impossible and disruptive. We no longer have the ability to maintain universal masking in our schools. Coupled with the significant downward trend in new cases, we have decided to suspend enforcement of the indoor mask mandate. Masks remain recommended and everyone should wear them in our schools, especially when social distancing cannot be maintained."
After school activities in all three districts have not been cancelled.
