CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Several activists groups gathered at Daley Plaza on Thursday, passionately imploring for the better treatment of the transgender community in Chicago.
As a part of Transgender Visibility Day, a rally was held. Chirah, a member of Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation passionately spoke, asking for a moment of silence to remember the recent members of the trans community who have died.
According to those at the rally, more trans people are murdered each year in Chicago than in any other city in America. When it comes to safety, resources, student support, and gender affirming care and housing in the Cook County Jail, activists gave elected officials a failing grade in the “report card” that they unveiled on Thursday.
“Have you failed to protect black trans women around you? Has your silence and violence...” Chirah said, breaking down in tears.
She called on more dedication in the community in order to collectively create a future where black trans women can thrive.
“I don’t want to be up here crying next year so I’m going to need you all to put in the work,” Chirah demanded.
