As the White Sox fight for playoff positioning on the field, many South Side residents took their fight to keep the team at 35th and Shields long-term to a meeting on Wednesday.
“This fight is not over by any stretch.”
11th Ward Alderman Nicole Lee met with reporters after a meeting of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority here at Rate Field which included a number of residents voicing their concerns about a potential move by the White Sox to a new, South Loop stadium…and a new Amtrak facility taking its place on the South Side.
“If someone was going to build a 120,000 square foot rail maintenance shed, move in fuel tanks, clean out toilets, there’s a huge impact. You’re going to want to know what that means for you and your children that live in the community.”
While Amtrak appears to be moving forward with the plans, ISFA Chair Leslie Darling told residents the board is standing strong.
“Our main priority is to keep the White Sox right here in our community.”
Amtrak is holding a public hearing on the potential move Thursday night in Chinatown.
