CASS COUNTY, Mich. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said there have been several reports of bear sightings in Cass County- unusual but not unprecedented.
“We were surprised, but then we were trying to figure out what it was doing here, and did it come from far away and just fall asleep and then all of a sudden wake up and here he is,” Sheree Adams told WSBT 22.
In the spring of 2015, a young bear’s movements were tracked from central Michigan to the same area and then it made its way to Michigan City.
It showed up twice at Pete Livas’ farm, getting into his bee hives.
That bear was around the area for months, eluding the DNR and a large trap. The bear was seen moving back north in September. Much larger.
It was believed to have hibernated in Michigan’s Warren Dunes before emerging in the spring and causing damage to cottages and ultimately being euthanized by the DNR as a nuisance animal that was a danger to people.
