Family members of the Rev. Jesse Jackson are preparing to gather around the Chicago civil rights icon during this holiday week.

A spokesperson for the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition said Rev. Jackson was discharged from an acute care facility last weekend, and Chicago Congressman Jonathan Jackson told WBBM Newsradio his father is doing well at home.

"He's stabilized, so for that we're grateful," said Rep. Jackson (D-1st District) after an unrelated event in the western suburbs Monday afternoon. "He's eating on his own and breathing on his own, and so we continue to pray for his full recovery."

Rev. Jackson is 84 years old, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital last month for treatment of what doctors first thought was Parkinson's disease but has now been diagnosed as progressive supra-nuclear palsy.

He's had a steady stream of well-wishers, including Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, who last week talked about his visit to see Rev. Jackson in the care facility: "I was sharing with him, because he's still pretty sharp and is aware of what's going on around him, that we're standing firm on the Rainbow Coalition that he helped build. He just lifted up his fist and got it up to about his shoulder - and it's a moment that quite frankly I'll never forget."

Rep. Jackson says his family has heard from people from around the world: "For that I'm truly appreciative."
