Rideshare driver shot in attempted carjacking on West Side: CPD

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A rideshare driver is in the hospital with life-threatening wounds after he was shot on the West Side Wednesday night.

The driver was dropping off a passenger near Iowa and LeClaire in the Austin neighborhood at about 10:10 p.m. when, Chicago police said, three men walked up and tried to carjack him.

The suspects took his cell phone, but the 51-year-old man refused to give up his car.

Police said one of the men shot him in the chest. He was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition.

No one is in custody.

The department said the 15th District, where this took place, ended the year with 834 car thefts, which is down from the prior year by about 9%.
