ROMEOVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Charges are pending against a suspect believed responsible for shooting a police officer in southwest suburban Romeoville overnight.
Romeoville officials said a police officer was shot during an exchange of gunfire during a foot pursuit early Thursday morning. Five-and-a-half hours later, a 29-year-old man was arrested.
“The officer has been here for at least five or six years, an outstanding young man, one of our best officers on the department,” said Police Chief Ken Kroll. “We have a lot of positive news coming from the hospital, we’re waiting for some really great news, out of the woods type news, but I can’t go there just yet. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.”
A village spokesperson said officers had spotted a stolen vehicle in the area around Sierra Trail and Summerfield Drive shortly after midnight.
The suspect started running away as officers approached the vehicle. During the chase, gunfire erupted.
