(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Roselle woman has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities said several dogs she owned were sick and infected, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Eyrina Bueno, 34, faces 17 misdemeanor counts related to her pets, as well as four misdemeanor counts related to how she treated a 5-year-old bulldog named Climax, which was in her care.

Prosecutors said Climax suffered a burst mammary tumor on March 19, 2023, and they accused Bueno of not bringing the dog to a veterinarian until 4 p.m. on March 21.

“The veterinarian advised Bueno that the most humane care for Climax would be euthanasia, due to her suffering from the burst mammary tumor, multiple untreated tumors, starvation, malnutrition, severe muscle loss and severe arthritis,” officials wrote.

After an investigation into Climax’s condition, Bueno was charged with the first four misdemeanors, and she was taken into custody. According to the sheriff’s office, Bueno posted a $2,000 bond and was released from custody on May 24.

The next day, authorities searched Bueno’s residence. Prosecutors said officers found one adult doberman, four American bulldog puppies and seven adult American bulldogs — all of whom were allegedly living in inhumane conditions.

Officials said the dogs were suffering a range of conditions, including: punctures to the face, hair loss, heartworm, worn-down teeth, respiratory distress, skin infections, bladder stones and bacterial infections.

It was also alleged that someone other than a medical professional had cropped the ears of at least one of the puppies, all of which were about 2 months old.

“The conditions under which these dogs were allegedly living are just heartbreaking,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “It is alleged that the abuse, neglect and lack of care Mrs. Bueno administered to Climax and the twelve dogs in this case, caused extreme pain and suffering that no companion animal should ever be subjected to.”

Although Climax was euthanized, officials said the other 12 dogs recovered from Bueno’s residence were placed into the care of DuPage County Animal Care and Control.

Bueno will appear in court on July 18, 2023.
