(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After recent severe storms and tornadoes rocked Illinois, emergency officials are reminding residents of a few key safety tips.

Residents still are reeling from last week's storms, which formed at least a dozen tornadoes across the state.

"These tragic storms just really ravaged Illinois," said Alicia Tate-Nadeau, Director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The agency said severe weather can happen at any time, which is why it's important to have a plan.

"It absolutely does save lives," said Tate-Nadeau.

She offers a few suggestions for items to keep in an emergency kit.

"I personally have a weather radio that has a solar panel on it and a light, and it also has a plug where you can plug in your cell phone and keep your cell phone battery charged."

IEMA said it's also a good idea to stock up on water and non-perishable foods.

As a reminder, when severe weather warnings are issued or sirens go off, it's best to seek shelter indoors in a place that doesn't have windows.
