
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for several Chicago area counties.
The warning is for Lake County, Northeastern Kane, McHenry County and Northern Cook Counties and remains in effect until 2:45 p.m.
Severe thunderstorms were spotted at 1 p.m., along a line extending from near Woodstock to Elgin, moving northeast 30 mph. The National Weather Service notes winds could gust to as high as 70 mph and produce ping pong ball size hail.
Locations that could be affected include the city, Elgin, Waukegan, Arlington Heights, Evanston, Schaumburg, Palatine, Skokie, Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Hoffman Estates, Glenview, Buffalo Grove, Bartlett, Crystal Lake, Streamwood, Hanover Park, Carpentersville, Wheeling and Park Ride.
The NWS had previously issued a Severe Thunderstorm, effective until 3 p.m. for such counties as Cook, Kane, Will, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall, De Kalb, La Salle Counties.
A severe weather threat also exists this evening. AccuWeather forecasts potentially strong thunderstorms, with heavy downpours and damaging winds possible.
The volatile weather continues tomorrow, with very windy conditions and scattered thunderstorms expected through midday. The skies will start to clear by the afternoon, AccuWeather says, but it will become cooler, as temperatures fall out of the 70s and into the 60s.
