WASHINGTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - For the third time in a year, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin has tested positive for COVID-19.

Durbin previously tested positive this past March as well as in July 2022.

Senator Durbin tweeted he’s disappointed to miss work in the chamber this week for the National Defense Authorization Act, the annual defense spending bill. The second highest ranking democrat in the Senate will miss votes ahead of Congress’ scheduled break for the month of August.

The 78-year-old said he’ll quarantine at home while working remotely. The slim democratic majority in the Senate is expected to reject amendments to the NDAA from House Republicans. Members of the House could vote by proxy during COVID but Speaker McCarthy ended the practice this year. Senators never had that ability.

The Judiciary committee that Durbin chairs is also slated to hold hearings on nominations and artificial intelligence this week.
