CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A system that dumped several inches of snow throughout the Chicago area has left. Now, we’ll face frigid temperatures today.
The majority of the region saw 2 to 3 inches of snow fall Wednesday afternoon and evening. It wasn’t as heavy as originally expected earlier in the week, but the accumulation did impact the evening commute and did require some cleanup.
The highest amounts were seen far north. Six inches of snow was observed in Winthrop Harbor. Five inches fell in Lake Villa. While at O’Hare, only 2.8 inches was recorded.
Snow totals:
-Winthrop Harbor: 6 inches
-Lake Villa: 5 inches
-Gurnee: 4.5 inches
-Downers Grove: 4.5 inches
-Bolingbrook: 4 inches
-Barrington: 3.4 inches
-Bull Valley: 3.4 inches
-O’Hare Airport: 2.8 inches
-Elgin: 2.6 inches
-Yorkville: 2.4 inches
-Midway Airport: 2.1 inches
Wednesday’s snowfall meant a little work for people getting out this morning.
In Skokie, main streets that WBBM’s Nancy Harty encountered were plowed, salted and mostly easy to navigate.
On the way into the gym, Liz said she’s grateful to live in a townhome where her homeowners association took care of the plowing and shoveling.
“I like snow. I think it’s pretty for a couple days, then it’s just gross,” she laughed.
Andy from Skokie said after shoveling Wednesday night, there wasn’t much left to do this morning.
“I think it’s good that we got it. I think it needs to happen. I think it’s good. It kind of cleans everything up, and it’s part of winter. We live in Chicago, so it’s not a big deal,” he told WBBM.
What’s noteworthy today will be the bitter cold. Overnight, temps fell into the teens, and, according to AccuWeather, they’ll stay there. But, with blustery conditions, wind chills will approach zero.
Tonight, lows will dip into the single digits, possibly reaching well below zero in certain outlying suburbs.
Friday, we’ll warm up, however another batch of snow is expected. The National Weather Service projects steady snow showers to start falling late in the afternoon and continuing into the night. The bulk will fall in a six hour period, with 2-4 inches forecasted for the areas near and north of I-80.
The holiday weekend could be even more eventful. AccuWeather says additional snow will come down Saturday into Sunday and by Monday, temps will once again plummet into the single digits.
