CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This past winter was one of Chicago's warmest - ever and a few tulips and other perennials are starting to appear. Too soon?

"Those few things that are kind of peeking up - the tulips and that - the cold weather I see in the forecast is not really going to be an issue, either for the early bulbs that are up like tulips or for any of the perennials that have started growing," said Tim Johnson, senior director of horticulture at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

He said there's nothing to worry about in terms of the weather.

"If we would've had a week of unusually warm weather already and everything was more advanced in its growth, then I'd be much more worried about cold weather that's on the horizon," Johnson added.

"But now everything's pretty tight-in-bud, so the cold weather has no concern of mine."

Johnson said now is a good time to start cleaning up your garden and cutting back perennials.
