CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A fire at a high-rise apartment building in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood on Wednesday left seven people hospitalized, including a child, officials with the fire department said.
The fire broke out in a 13-story building on the 7100 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, according to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford.
He said seven people were transported from that fire, including one child who was in serious to critical condition. The six other people who were hospitalized were not believed to have life-threatening injuries.
Langford said the fire began in a second-floor unit and spread from there.
"The fire began on the second floor. Crews got here; it had heavy fire in the unit and a lot of smoke going out, so they called for a 211 for more response," he said.
Investigators said it appears the fire is completely out, and crews were checking the building for anyone else in need of help inside.
