CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — African American Pastors like Torrey Barrett, of the Life Center Church of God In Christ, not only endorsed Mayor Lori Lightfoot's re-election, but he said shame on other Black candidates working so hard to defeat her.

“For the last 40 years, we’ve seen, intentionally, former administrations that have neglected our community, and we have one that has invested in our community — and we need to make sure that she stays in office,” Barrett said.

Pastor Cy Fields, of New Landmark Baptist Church, said this is a critical election, and he joined with those endorsing Lori Lightfoot.

“First of all, let me say everybody, all of Chicago, should vote,” Fields said. “All of us should vote, but we stand here today to say, ‘Let your vote be for Mayor Lori Lightfoot.’ She has unfinished business.”

Leonard Muhammad, with the Nation of Islam, scoffed at those who complain that Lightfoot is too combative.

“All of this stuff about a kinder, gentler Lori … I don’t know how you can be so kind and so gentle, when the problems that you’re dealing with call for courage and somebody that’s willing to fight,” Muhammad said.

Lightfoot welcomed the support and didn't deny it is a difficult task ahead.

“Yes, we continue to have challenges,” the mayor said. “We’ve broken down the walls of Jericho, but we’re not in the promised land — we’re not in Canaan — yet. But we are on our way.”

Those at the Bronzeville gathering saw it as a call to action.
