CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The state of Illinois is awarding more than $8 million in grants to small businesses and commercial corridors to rebuild after the violence and destruction following the murder of George Floyd.
The final round of Rebuild Distressed Community grants will mean around $1 million each for Aurora, Markham and the Southeast Chicago Chamber of Commerce and nearly $1.5 million dollars for Back of the Yards. West Humboldt Park’s development council will get $300,000.
The RDC program was launched in 2020 by the state to help businesses and communities rebuild from civil unrest.
The grants will help pay insurance deductibles and construction to repair damage from civil unrest. A chain of cellphone stores called NoContract Inc. is among 26 businesses getting grants. The owner said it has helped them reopen stores and keep workers employed on Chicago’s south side.
"The Rebuild Distressed Communities program is another way for our state to recover, heal, and grow together," said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton in a statement.
"Our administration is committed to economic development that uplifts all of us, and putting our state's small businesses and vulnerable communities at the forefront through this funding is how we expand equity and opportunity across Illinois."
