CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Citizens panel leading the search for a new Police Superintendent is out with a progress report.

Anthony Driver, President of the interim Community Commission on public safety and accountability said 53 people have applied for the job of Police Superintendent including 42 men and 11 women.

Six had been chiefs of police in other jurisdictions and 32 have been affiliated with the Chicago Police Department in some way past or present. Driver said the candidates are being screened and every person who is qualified will receive an interview.

Commissioner Remel Terry said they're asking many people including CBD officers what they want to see in a superintendent.

"They want someone who can lead them properly- who knows the department, who knows the city of Chicago, who has an understanding of what they're dealing with on a day to day and someone who will come in and be an advocate."
