GRAYSLAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As tornadoes whipped through Kansas this weekend, a young man from suburban Grayslake was killed.
Gavin Short, 19 of Grayslake was a meteorology student at the University of Oklahoma. What better thing for a meteorology student to do than "chase" a tornado?
Short and his two friends, also meteorology students, survived the twister. They were headed back to school when their vehicle hydroplaned, going off the road.
When they quickly got back on the road, their car was slammed by a semi 85 miles north of Oklahoma City.
The truck driver survived. The other boys with Short were identified as Nicholas Nair, 20 of Denton, Texas and Drake Brook, 22 of Evansville, Indiana.
“The university is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of three students. Each were valued and loved members of our community," the University of Oklahoma said in a statement.
