(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — West Chicago officials are canceling a parade that was to be part of this weekend’s Railroad Days festival, following the July 4 shooting in Highland Park.
Organizers said the move is partly out of safety concerns over potential “copycat scenarios.” It’s also a way to pay respects to the victims from Monday’s attack in the North Shore community, they noted.
“The safety of our community members will always be at the forefront of how our City operates,” Mayor Ruben Pineda said in a prepared statement. “As our country tries to understand this senseless act of violence, the City finds it necessary to avoid the risk of allowing this type of incident to re-occur within our own community.”
Other activities during Railroad Days include a carnival and live music.
