(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — When thinking about holiday shopping destinations, a train station doesn’t always come to mind. But that’s exactly where the city of Lake Forest is setting up shop.

Called Lake Forest Station, the pop-up shop opened Wednesday morning to offer something unique for the holiday season while supporting 16 local non-profit organizations.

“The idea was to bring them all together and let the pop-up shop be a venue for them to sell merchandise, with some branding to it, for their institution,” Lake Forest Mayor George Pandaleon told WBBM Newsradio.

Featured organizations include Mothers Trust Foundation, Paws for Patrick and Ragdale, an artists community located on the former country estate of architect Howard Van Doren Shaw.

The shop sells everything from mugs and sweatshirts to coffee and canned fruit.

“We call them gifts that give back,” Pandaleon said. “They are all gifts that can be purchased, with all the proceeds going back to the individual organization that had that product.”

The pop-up shop was first introduced in 2020 and generated roughly $60,000.

This year’s Lake Forest Station is open Thursday through Saturday and runs from Nov. 24 to Dec. 30.
