(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Authorities in Kane County say a 39-year-old motorist from Hampshire was seriously injured after he struck and killed a horse on Route 47 overnight.
It was about 12:40 a.m. when a Kane County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling Route 47 and he came across the dead horse.
Pat Gengler, the undersheriff in Kane County, says the deputy then noticed a Dodge Ram pickup on the side of the road.
Gengler says the driver had to be extricated from the wreckage.
An accident like this is not rare, he notes.
“There’s no street lights, and you get out there at dark, and these are dark animals. You can be on them so fast there’s not a whole lot you can do.”
Gengler said deputies are still investigating the circumstances.
He says the owner of the horse told authorities he’d been looking for the horse and that the animal had been sick and got out of the pasture.
