(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Forest Preserve District of Kane County had to cancel its 2020 summer camp season to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
This year, it will offer six weeks of half-day and full-day camps to kids entering grades 1-6.
The Week in the Woods summer day camps begin June 21 and feature a different theme every week. One theme is STEM in Nature, while another is Track and Survival.
“Kids look for signs and tracks that animals leave behind and how they can learn from animal survival techniques,” Barb McKittrick, environmental education manager for the forest preserve, said.
For those interested in a full-day option, the Junior Naturalist Camp is being offered through a partnership with the Geneva Park District.
The Forest Preserve District plans to follow CDC and state COVID-19 guidance by limiting camp groups to 12 kids, keeping six feet of social distance and requiring masks to be worn indoors and outdoors.
All staff and counselors are also fully vaccinated.
McKittrick tells WBBM Newsradio there’s been an unprecedented amount of foot traffic at the forest preserves during the pandemic and the trend holds true when it comes to camp registration.
