(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Prosecutors say the Berwyn man now behind bars for a road rage shooting that killed a three-year-old boy fired those shots from a gun he and his wife had picked up less than three hours earlier.

That's some of what came out after the suspect's first hearing Friday.

Three-year-old Mateo Zastro was shot and killed on Chicago's Southwest Side back on September 30, 2022 as he rode in the backseat of his mother's SUV.

The State's Attorney's Office said at 6 p.m. on that date 32-year-old Govanni Hernandez and his wife picked up a handgun they legally purchased three days earlier from a store in Oak Forest.

Less than three hours later, Hernandez, his wife and Mateo's mother were all forced to merge into a construction zone on Marquette Road, and that's when the shooting happened.

Hernandez has been charged with first-degree murder.
