(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man is facing at least one federal charge after wounding a Chicago police officer and two ATF agents earlier this week.

Eugene McLaurin, 28, is charged with one count of using a dangerous and deadly weapon to assault a special agent from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, federal prosecutors said.

McLaurin faces up to 20 years behind bars, if convicted. He was to make an initial court appearance Thursday.

Authorities said McLaurin early Wednesday followed an unmarked vehicle in which the police officer and agents were in and opened fire, believing the vehicle was driven by members of a rival street gang.

The Chicago officer and two federal agents, who had been on an undercover operation on the South Side, were treated and released from the hospital.
