Teachers at Riverdale elementary school go on strike

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Teachers at General George Patton Elementary School in Riverdale went on strike Monday.

School District 133 and the teachers union have been negotiating for about nine months.

The last remaining issues, according to the district, are pay and language about a dress code that the union calls “antiquated and unnecessary.”

The district is offering a pay increase of more than 16% over four years.

The teachers are demanding 20%.

The district said it can’t afford that, with teachers telling it to use surplus funds.

The teachers also said the minority students have been missing out on programs like technology, music and art that have been neglected for years.

They’re not staffed or funded, the teachers said.

Despite the strike, school is in session.
