(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Cook County teen has been sentenced to state juvenile detention after admitting to robbing a woman at gunpoint in Willowbrook late last year.
Authorities say the juvenile, who is 15, approached a woman Oct. 13 in the parking lot of a Target store on Kingery Highway as she was loading items into her vehicle. He allegedly pointed a gun at her and demanded her car keys.
The woman complied and ran into the store to call 9-1-1. Police who responded to the scene determined the teen was unable to drive away in the vehicle. They found him at a nearby hotel within the hour.
At the time of his arrest, officials said, the juvenile had multiple felony cases pending in Cook County and one in Will County. Under his guilty plea earlier this year to one count of armed robbery, the unidentified teen was sentenced Monday to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice for a period not to exceed his 21st birthday.
"The extremely quick apprehension and successful prosecution of the juvenile charged in this case sends the message that in DuPage County we will not tolerate this type of violent behavior, regardless of the defendant's age," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berline said in a news release.
The woman was not harmed.
