CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Anglophiles who want to watch the coronation of King Charles III with other fans of the monarchy will be able to do so at the Globe Pub in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood Saturday morning.
The English pub is no stranger to showing events on Greenwich Mean Time, as a soccer bar that hosts Arsenal and Aston Villa games, and owner Cassie Dorf said they’ll open at 5 a.m. for the coronation.
“We had some pretty early mornings for [the] World Cup, where we had lines down the block, but I feel like this may be even a little bit earlier than some of those games,” she said.
Dorf, who owns the bar with her husband, said they have many English customers, and they’ve heard people will be interested in watching.
Of course, the early start time means customers will have to start drinking until 6 a.m., when Dorf said they can begin serving alcohol.
“We’ll have the coffee brewing and any non-alcoholic drinks people would like to enjoy, we’ll have those ready to go, and then we’ll get that booze pouring as soon as we possibly can,” she said.
Dorf says their royal menu will include bubble and squeak, Pimm’s Cup and tea.
As for how long the TVs will be tuned to coverage of the new monarch, Dorf said one of the two Premier League teams they carry has a game at 9 a.m. Later on Saturday, the Globe Pub will show the Chicago Fire game and the Kentucky Derby.
That means there will be another reason to wear a fancy hat for those who stick around.
The Globe Pub is located at 1934 W. Irving Park Road.
