CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Many Chicagoans woke up early to get a good spot to see the Air and Water Show Saturday.

Olivia Pesce set up a blanket and inflatable couch and was waiting for her family about midway between Oak Street Beach and North Avenue.

She arrived at 8:30 a.m. and brought lot of snacks and food.

"I'm just excited to be here-excited to see some planes."

John Begley is from Nebraska and is in Chicago for the weekend. He watched the show right by the water.

"I heard them practicing yesterday and I came off the plane and I took a nap and all I was hearing was some crazy noises, but they were practicing yesterday."

Thousands of people were crowded along the beaches. And while the Air and Water Show is free, those who wanted to pay for a seat, could rent a beach lounge chair for $69.

The aircrafts that participated in the show took off from Gary/Chicago International Airport in Gary and the perspective of the show is different there.

"The air show is such a phenomenal experience. We get to perform for so many masses of people along the beach," said civilian performer Susan Dacy.

It was a great day for both pilots and fans alike. JJ said seeing the airplanes from the Gary airport is "way better" than seeing them in the city.

"I think the two parts- the best of watching airplanes are the takeoff and landing and they do fly-bys down here."
