CARY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The school week got off to a wild start for some staff members at a Cary elementary school who are now being praised as heroes.
Cary Police and Fire officials were called to the parking lot of Three Oaks Elementary School around 9:30 a.m. for reports of a crash.
“A surreal moment, I’m not even sure I’ve fully processed it yet,” said Three Oaks Elementary Principal Kyle Block.
Block was one of the first outside.
“I was expecting to see more of a fender bender or a car accident. What we saw was that the car was still on, still running, and there was a person in the driver’s seat,” Block said.
That driver was suffering from a medical emergency, and before first responders arrived, Block and others, including Assistant Principal Rosalba Conde, rushed to help.
“CPR, everything that we remember, we had our nurse that was guiding us on taking turns. At that point, Mr. Block ran inside the building to get the defibrillator,” Conde said.
Ashley Clinge is in her first year as the Three Oaks nurse and was able to help the man regain a pulse before he was hospitalized for treatment.
“I’m really glad that we were all there together,” Clinge said. “I think the key takeaway for all of us is that we can all work really well together as a team and do the best we can for this individual.”
