Scientists are marveling over the cutest little creature in the sea.
Nearly six-thousand feet deep in the Pacific ocean, in the area of the Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador, a deep-sea expedition spotted a tiny blue octopus about four inches across. It can fit in the palm of your hand.
Janet Voight, a curator of invertebrates at Chicago's Field Museum, told WBBM, "I came across this photo (of the octopus) and I was like oh my goodness! I gotta see that!"
But Voight says you might never see one in an aquarium, noting, "we can't bring them up and have them be alive. The pressure change from the sea floor to the surface really does them in."
"The take home message for me, that I like to get across to people," Voight said, "is that this is really cool, it's an octopus that has never been seen before but all around us there are other animals that we don't know exist. It's just the tip of the iceberg because the deep sea is so poorly explored."
