(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker picked up the endorsement of the Chicago Tribune — a nod very few Democrats have received — as he seeks re-election.
Calling the state's COVID response "far from perfect,” the paper’s editorial board still credits Pritzker for humility and honesty in addressing residents about the virus and making decisions based on science.
The paper also supports his moves to put more money into the state's pensions and so-called rainy day fund. But the board says his blind spots include crime and not standing up to public-sector unions.
While Pritzker refused to sit down with the board for an interview, it made the rare move to choose him over a Republican.
The paper calls GOP candidate Darren Bailey more polished and genial in a recent meeting than in the primary. But the paper said it disagrees with the lawmaker from Southern Illinois on abortion and his push to eliminate FOID cards.
