CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police commanders announced the arrests of two men over the shooting death of a young father on the city's Northwest Side on Tuesday — and they said both men were out on parole from earlier crimes.
Chicago Police Deputy Chief of Detectives Kevin Bruno was joined by several other officers who worked on this case as they announced charges against 32-year-old Divonte Calhoun, and 41-year-old Justin Redmond in the shooting death of 24-year-old Sett Rodriguez-Lara.
Both men were charged with felony counts of armed robbery and first-degree murder.
Bruno credited members of the community who came forward with security camera footage, which ended up key pieces of evidence in CPD's investigation.
"After the return of additional pieces of evidence, Calhoun was taken into custody on Sunday, and Redmond was taken into custody [Monday]," he said. "At the time of the murder, Calhoun was on parole for armed robbery, and Redmond was on parole for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. The callous actions of these offenders left the victim's loved ones and an entire community mourning the loss of a young father."
The shooting and robbery happened around 7 a.m. on May 10 on North Pittsburgh Avenue near West Byron Street. Officials said Calhoun approached Rodriguez-Lara, who was headed to work, and shot him.
Local Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th) was also present on Tuesday.
"I'm sure the community's ecstatic," Sposato said. "This didn't come fast enough for us, but I know they were working hard to get it. I can't speak for the family, but I'm sure they're ecstatic. Every time you hear something about a murder or anything violent, people always say they want closure, and they want justice, and hopefully justice will prevail here."
