(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in south suburban Calumet City have announced charges in connection with the shooting death of a security guard at River Oaks Mall one year ago.

Norman Thomas, 57, was shot during a robbery at Flawless Diamonds on Nov. 16, 2022. Earlier this week, two 38-year-old men from Chicago, Maxx Walker and Frank Adkins, were arrested and charged with murder, Calumet City Police spokesman Sean Howard said Thursday.

The shooting remains under investigation, and the search continues for others involved in the robbery, he said.

Thomas, the slain security guard, was a U.S. Army veteran who served during Operation Desert Storm.

“It was a such a tragic event because this was a gentleman that everybody knew in the mall. He was like a mainstay at the south end entrance of the mall, and he was a such a nice man,” Howard said.
