CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) – Chicago police are investigating two violent attacks near the University of Illinois Chicago campus early Monday, less than a half-mile and an hour apart, though it remains unclear whether the incidents are connected.
The first attack happened around 1 a.m. near Canal Street and 14th Place. Police said a 40-year-old man was walking when an assailant on a bicycle approached, struck him several times with an unknown object, stole his belongings and fled.
About an hour later, officers on patrol discovered a second victim near Roosevelt Road and Jefferson Street. The 44-year-old man told police he had been assaulted by two men, one of whom was armed with an axe. The offenders ran from the scene before officers arrived.
Both victims were taken to area hospitals and are expected to recover, police said.
No arrests have been made. Area Three detectives are investigating.
