CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A good old fashioned Chicago March snowstorm will begin later today.
Last week, Illinois avoided the system that produced several inches of snow in Northwest Indiana. But, today, it’s like that will not be the case.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake, DuPage, and Northern Cook Counties, beginning today at 3 p.m. and lasting until 7 a.m. tomorrow.
In far northern Illinois, the precipitation will begin by mid-afternoon as rain and then transition to a wet heavy snow. Areas south will see snow start to fall in early evening hours, according to the NWS.
The heaviest amounts of snow will be closer to the Wisconsin border, with up to 4 to 7 inches possible. Near the I-88 corridor, north and west of the city, 2 to 4 inches is expected, the NWS says. Road travel will become difficult, the NWS warned, and untreated will become snow covered.
For the city and suburbs just south, we’ll see similar amounts. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Central Cook County, starting at 6 p.m. tonight and extending to 7 a.m. Friday. The NWS predicts accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, with the snow falling down the heaviest during the evening hours- from 7 to 12 a.m.
AccuWeather says not only the snow will linger into the morning, but so will the cold. Temperatures will remain in the mid 30s throughout the weekend and into early next week.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WBBM Newsradio for the latest weather information.
