CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- University of Chicago Medicine has announced plans to build a new facility in Northwest Indiana.

U Chicago Medicine wants to build a 116,000 square foot facility in Crown Point on I-65 and 109th Avenue, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.

The proposed facility would include a micro-hospital with an emergency department and a short-stay in-patient unit, a comprehensive cancer center, imaging and lab services and a medical office building with a variety of specialties such as Cardiology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and women's health.

Audre Bagnall, an executive vice president at UChicago Medicine. told the Times that 15 percent of Northwest Indiana residents currently seek medical care outside of the area, and that 21 percent of them go to the University of Chicago. "This is a very important market for us," she said.

The Crown Point Zoning Board of Appeals has approved the project, which now must be voted on by the Crown Point City Council.
